The Umayyad Caliphate was the second caliphate, an Islamic state regarded as succeeding the prophet Muhammad. The Umayyads continued the Muslim conquests, incorporating the Transoxiana, Sindh, the Maghreb and the Iberian Peninsula (Al-Andalus) into the Muslim world.[1]

In 750, the Umayyad dynasty was overthrown by a rebellion led by the Abbasids, which led to the creation of the third caliphate. The survivors of the revolution, including Abd al-Rahman I, were driven west and established themselves in Córdoba, founding an emirate.[2]
