Tydeus was a legendary hero and one of the Seven Against Thebes in Greek mythology.
Along with six other individuals, Tydeus was part of the Argive army hired by the Theban king Polynikes to help him reclaim his city. In the heat of the battle, Tydeus ate the brain of one of the city's defender, Melanippos.[1]
After his death, his lair in Argolis was abandoned and eventually claimed by the Followers of Ares in the 5th century BCE. The ruins were later explored by the misthios Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War.[2]
