The Town crier was a public announcer of the 18th century. In the Colonial Era they advertised from newspapers to rewards for suspects or guilty of any crime. The Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton could bribe the criers in Boston and New York, in order to reduce his notoriety.[1]
Trivia
- Unlike heralds in Italy and Constantinople, town criers could not be pickpocketed after being bribed.
- The criers did not attract crowds of civilians, and some held up newspapers.
