Thomas Sumter (14 August 1734 – 1 June 1832) was a Brigadier General in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

By 1781, Sumter had lost his fighting edge and was rumored to be sleeping through battles. When the Colonial Assassins learned Banastre Tarleton's forces were heading to meet Sumter in battle, they arrived to help. At the subsequent Battle of Blackstock's Farm, Sumter was wounded but became responsible for Tarleton's first defeat.
