The Spear of Destiny, also known as the Holy Lance, is the name given to the lance that pierced Jesus of Nazareth during his crucifixion in 33 CE.[1] Centuries later, during the Vikings' siege of Paris in 885 CE, legend held that the lance head was allegedly embedded in the pommel of the Frankish king Charlemagne's short sword Joyeuse[2] The rest of the lance was believed to be held in the Hofburg palace treasury in Vienna, Austria until 1938, when the Nazi regime reportedly seized it following Austria's annexation.[3]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
According to Matthew J. Kirby, [citation needed] the author of the Assassin's Creed: Last Descendants series, the Spear of Destiny was a partial inspiration for the Trident of Eden's Devotion prong, which Holy Roman Emperor Otto I owned and kept in Vienna, paralleling the historical and current location of the holy relic.
