Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the regions of Italy.

History

The Ionians, one of the main four Greek tribes, founded several colonies in Sicily and South Italy.[1] During the Peloponnesian War, Alkibiades convinced Athens to send a military expedition to Sicily, which was disastrous for the Athenians, who lost their entire expeditionary force, signaling the beginning of the end of Athens' power.[2]

In the 1st century BCE, Sicily was a part of the Roman Republic and the home to Apollodorus before he left for Alexandria as a young man.[3][4]

In early 16th century CE, Italian Templar Cesare Borgia planned on using Leonardo da Vinci's tank as the centerpiece of a surprise attack on Sicily, though his plans were thwarted by Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who destroyed the tank and its blueprints.[5]
