Shimazu Takahisa (島津 貴久; 1514 – 1571) was a Japanese daimyō[1] in Kagoshima,[2] as well as the 15th leader of the Shimazu clan.[1] He was the first host of the Templar Francis Xavier's Jesuit mission to Japan, welcoming the missionaries[2] in 1549[1] and giving them permission to preach Christianity in his domains, hoping this would lead to more trade with the Portuguese. After a year, with no Portuguese ships having arrived[2] and facing pressure from local Buddhists,[1] Takahisa prohibited Christianity and expelled Xavier.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In Episode 37 of Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple, it is mentioned that Francis Xavier worked alongside the Shimazu clan to spread the Templar ideology in Japan and that the clan continued Xavier's mission after his death. While Takahisa's withdrawal of his support of the Jesuits could be seen as a contradiction of this, it is possible that some Shimazu clan members continued to help the Templars in secret.
