Samuel de Champlain (August 1574 – 25 December 1635) was a French navigator and explorer.

In 1614, King Louis XIII of France requested Samuel to bring a number of Franciscan Récollets to Canada to further life in the newly established French colony. Amongst the friars were Father Denys Jamet, Father Jean Dolbeau, Father Joseph Le Caron, Brother Pacifique Duplessis and Brother Nicolas Viel.[1]
