The Salpêtrière Hospital (French: Hôpital de la Salpêtrière), later merged with another hospital and renamed the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, is an institute located in Paris, France. During the French Revolution, it was as much an asylum as a prison, housing many individuals that were deemed unfit to walk the streets, such as vagabonds, beggars, and prostitutes.
