SAVAK, the Organization of Intelligence and National Security (Persian: سازمان اطلاعات و امنیت کشور) was a secret police and intelligence service founded by Iran's king, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, in 1957, along with the help of the United States' CIA and Israel's Mossad.
At its peak period, SAVAK had nearly 60,000 agents, although more conservative estimates placed the number of agents at around 4,000-6,000 members. The organization has been described as Iran's "most hated and feared institution", due to its practice of torturing and executing opponents of the Pahlavi regime. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the group was disbanded and all its directors were executed.
In one of the rifts he programmed into the Animus, Clay Kaczmarek revealed to Desmond Miles and the other Assassins that the group's foundation was puppeteered by Abstergo Industries and the Templar Order, in order to terrorize citizens and protect capitalist oil interests in Iran.
