Porta Appia

Porta Appia is the southeastern gateway to Rome through the Aurelian Walls.

One of the largest and most important gates of the city, it was accordingly renovated and fortified twice in its early life. Its significance owed to it being the starting point for the Via Appia, which led from Rome throughout southern Italy, and traffic at this gate was often hefty as a result.[1]

Trivia

The Porta Aurelia, mislabeled the Porta Appia in game
  • In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, all of the gates of Rome are misidentified, though Shaun Hastings's database entries remain factually correct. As such, despite the fact that the database entry on Porta Appia expressly describes it as the "south-easterly entrance", the gate actually marked as the Porta Appia is the Porta Aurelia, the most western gate of Rome, lying in Trastevere. In turn, the actual Porta Appia is mislabeled as the Porta Praenestina. For the sake of convenience, this article assumes that, canonically, Shaun Hastings's research is correct whereas the Animus 2.01 labeled the gates erroneously.
