Pivots were a series of virus-generated code segments found within the Animus, which were mainly used to hack into the virtual machine's core programming, allowing a user to upload their own Animus sessions of Ratonhnhaké:ton's genetic memories, as well as synchronizing them to the "Cloud".
In late 2012, an Abstergo Industries engineer used a worm virus to hack the Animus 3.0, allowing for the upload of Desmond Miles' genetic memories to Abstergo's servers. However, the virus failed, resulting in two pivots located in the already rendered city of Boston.
