Pope Paul III (1468 – 1549), born Alessandro Farnese, was Pope from 1534 to his death.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During his tenure, he ordered the architect Michelangelo to redo several of the buildings on the Capitoline Hill for the sole purpose of impressing Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire.[1]

In 1542, he began the Roman Inquisition by establishing a system of tribunals for prosecuting anyone with alternate religious beliefs to Christianity.[2]
