Path of Revenge was a memory of Ratonhnhaké:ton's, relived through mysterious means.
Description
Ratonhnhaké:ton returned to the cave that he had awoken earlier in, only to discover the bloody bodies of Bluecoats and the few remaining Kanien'kehá:ka, including the Clan Mother. Her dying wish is for Ratonhnhaké:ton to kill Benedict Arnold before moving on to Washington.
Dialogue
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: Oiá:ner!
Ratonhnhaké:ton knelt down as Oiá:ner reached out to him. He grasped her hand and she turned towards him slightly as she spoke.
- Oiá:ner: Ratonhnhaké:ton. Arnold's men followed your trail back here. Your brothers fought well but there were too many
Oiá:ner closed her eyes and gasped in pain.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: I thought the tea...
- Oiá:ner: Gives strength, not immortality.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: It gives me life! I've never felt anything like it!
- Oiá:ner: You must be careful. Respect the power of the tea, Ratonhnhaké:ton. Your mother was right to worry about the danger.
Oiá:ner closed her eyes and gasped in pain again.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: I'm certain I can defeat anyone!
Oiá:ner opened her eyes and spoke softly.
- Oiá:ner: Good. First kill Arnold and stop the destruction here. Then kill Washington. You must succeed. Ratonhnhaké:ton. If not you... nobody.
Oiá:ner died and Ratonhnhaké:ton released her hand. He stood up and proceeded to a nearby Bluecoat camp to discern the whereabouts of General Arnold. He eventually came across two Bluecoats discussing the current direction of the military and began to eavesdrop on their conversation.
- Bluecoat 1: Each man is as mad as the next. Putnam gutted a man yesterday for having dirt in his musket. I'm all for weeding out the weak but this is something else entirely. Be careful lad, we're on the right side but that doesn't mean we're safe.
- Bluecoat 2: We dealt with those savages like we was supposed to. Tough as nails they was. But we brought them down. Felt good. We have nothing to worry about.
- Bluecoat 1: Don't be so sure. We've got one more day in this place before we're relieved. And then it's off to the Valley Forge awaiting orders from Commander Putnam.
- Bluecoat 2: Where's Arnold then?
- Bluecoat 1: He gone off into some sort of seclusion until the King sets his plans. Putnam is acting commander until Arnold comes back.
Ratonhnhaké:ton then chased down a slave wagon. As soon as he had caught up to it, he launched an attack.
- Kanien'kehá:ka man: Ratonhnhaké:ton! Get them!
Ratonhnhaké:ton killed all the escorts and freed the captives.
- Kanien'kehá:ka woman: We are very grateful.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: I would help you with your people, but I must get to Valley Forge.
- Kanien'kehá:ka woman: Once everyone is safe at the refugee camp north of here, I will join you at Valley Forge to help you to repay your kindness.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: No need, but if I see you there, I will be happy for your help.
- Kanien'kehá:ka woman: You may find other camps full of our enslaved people. They are sad reminders of Arnold's terror and devastation.
She turned and left. Ratonhnhaké:ton made his way towards Valley Forge, meeting the Kanien'kehá:ka woman once again. She explained the situation as he peered through a looking glass.
- Kanien'kehá:ka woman: Ratonhnhaké:ton! It's very dangerous here. Guards, everywhere. They stalk the edges of the camps with dogs. These are very good dogs, Ratonhnhaké:ton, alert with sharp eyes. If you get even many yards away from them, they yowl and bring the soldiers.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: Thank you. It's not safe here. Go home. You have repaid my kindness.
- Kanien'kehá:ka woman: You will succeed, Ratonhnhaké:ton. Good-bye.
She left and Ratonhnhaké:ton quickly discovered that guard dogs could negate his Wolf Cloak. This forced Ratonhnhaké:ton to either kill the dogs or set bait, such as raw meat, to distract them. He began to infiltrate the camp in order to locate General Israel Putnam. Ratonhnhaké:ton eventually found him exiting a tent and conversing with a soldier.
- Putnam: I must spaek with Arnold myself.
- Bluecoat: Yes sir. I'll arrange a detail to escort you immediately.
- Putnam: I do not need one. You are acting commanding officer in my absence. If anything should go wrong... well, your widow will be provided for. Dismissed.
- Bluecoat: Yes, sir.
As General Putnam left, Ratonhnhaké:ton tailed him to Benedict Arnold. Along the way, Putnam stopped and casually observed an execution by firing squad. As he made his way outside the camp, Putnam gestured to two Bluecoats standing guard and they quickly regrouped to one side of the avenue. He would then mount a horse and ride across a stream, up a hill, and across a second stream. Eventually Putnam arrived at a fort and was allowed inside. Ratonhnhaké:ton gained entry by distracting the guards by releasing a caged bear.
- Bluecoat 1: This is the worst.
- Bluecoat 2: It's not so bad! The bear's in the cage. He don't look to strong to me.
- Bluecoat 1: Bear'd soon eat us as look at us.
- Bluecoat 2: He looks friendly enough.
- Bluecoat 1: Hmph. Friendly until he's hungry.
- Bluecoat 2: Even so, our duty ain't as bad as Addie's.
- Bluecoat 1: Why? What has he got to do?
- Bluecoat 2: Clean the cage!
Ratonhnhaké:ton freed the bear at this point and it began to attack one of the Bluecoat guards. One of the Bluecoats on overwatch sounded the alarm to quickly catch the bear.
- Bluecoat 3: The bear! Get the bear! General Arnold will have our heads!
The doors swung open and a group of Bluecoats marched out. Ratonhnhaké:ton then made his way through the doors to locate Benedict Arnold. Ratonhnhaké:ton eventually found Arnold pacing in a circle and assassinated him.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: I have waited a long time to end your treachery. You escaped me once, but today you die.
- Arnold: Who are you? What is happening?
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: You know who I am.
- Arnold: I've never seen you before in my life! Washington's apple. He uses it to control men you... you have to believe me. I... I was not in my right mind.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: What you did at West Point was of no one's mind but yours.
- Arnold: West Point? I... I've never set foot in that fort in my life.
Arnold grunts and grabs Ratonhnhaké:ton's hand. As Arnold continued to speak, Ratonhnhaké:ton kept gazing between Arnold's hand and his face.
- Arnold: Please. Washington, he's gone mad. You, you have to bring him down. He's no more a man but a monster. Find Benjamin Franklin in Boston. He can help you - but you have to, you have to free him.
- Ratonhnhaké:ton: Free him from where? Where?
At this point, Arnold expired and Ratonhnhaké:ton continued to kneel next to his body, contemplating his words. Putnam snuck up behind Ratonhnhaké:ton and brought back his arm, pistol in hand. Ratonhnhaké:ton quickly turned around but was too late to block the blow. Putnam succeeded in striking Ratonhnhaké:ton across the face, knocking him unconscious. Putnam stood over Ratonhnhaké:ton with a malicious expression.
- Putnam: Got you.
Outcome
Oiá:ner, several Kanien'kehá:ka warriors, and several Bluecoats died. Ratonhnhaké:ton discovered weaknesses to his Wolf Cloak and assassinated Benedict Arnold. Ratonhnhaké:ton was rendered unconcious by General Putnam and locked in a slave cart, bound for Boston.
Trivia
- Only one constraint is needed to gain full synchronization during this mission: Ratonhnhaké:ton had to avoid all stalking bushes during the eavesdrop.
