Onyx (died 824) was a wolf companion to the Persian mercenary Azadeh.
Biography
Early life
During Azadeh's childhood, Onyx was born as the runt of the litter. However, Azadeh chose Onyx as she saw more in her than just size. Training with Azadeh, Onyx learned how to respond well to commands, in the form of whistles, and protected her owner with fervent loyalty.[1]
Tracking down the Martyrs
Upon Azadeh's father becoming ill, a hooded stranger appeared to Azadeh and offered a cure in exchange for her and Onyx's services on a task. Azadeh accepted and thus she and Onyx traveled to Fustat to meet him and her other fellow mercenaries for his mission. When all members arrived, they all were tasked to track a cult called the Martyrs of Agaunum and recover a case they guarded. At the meeting, she and Azadeh became acquainted with a young Roshan.[2]
While on the road to track the Martyrs, Azadeh and Onyx took upon them to hunt for hares for the group while others planned how to ambush the Martyrs. Deciding to set a bomb on top of them, the group managed to have cornered the Martyrs. Azadeh and Onyx guarded Wei, a Chinese ex-rebel and bombmaker, who created a bomb to drop on the Martyrs. Meanwhile, the rest awaited at the bottom to fight while Francis, a self-proclaimed Christian prophet, was to give the signal. However, it all went wrong when Francis signaled too early.[2]
Fighting alongside Azadeh, Onyx fought against the Martyrs and their guards. Yet, it failed as the Martyrs escaped while the group lost Mared, a Welsh mercenary, due to her lover and pirate Dias having used her as a human shield. Despite tensions arising, they regrouped and planned to go around the Martyrs through the Red Sea.[3]
Traveling through Sinai, Onyx was instructed to go around the mountain in front of them by Azadeh, while the rest climbed it from top to bottom. While Onyx left by herself, she grew tired but made it around the mountain. Upon her arrival, she found what was left of Wei, who had fallen to his death. While being found by both Azadeh and Roshan, she and Azadeh soon left, but Roshan stayed behind and took Wei's jade trinket for his family to have. Altogether at a dock, they all found, stole, and boarded a dhow to travel towards Karachi.[4]
During their voyage, Onyx and Azadeh stood guard after rescuing both Roshan and Samoan warrior Nafanua, who were pushed overboard earlier. While Onyx guarded a sleeping Nafanua, Azadeh stayed with Roshan. Upon their arrival, they all stayed in an inn to recuperate except Roshan, who left to find maps of the mountains and Karachi for their journey.[5] However, when Azadeh noticed Roshan and the twin brothers Geir and Gud gone for too long, both she and Onyx left to search for them.[6] Fortunately, through Onyx's scent of Roshan,[1] they found her, who detailed the twins' betrayal and subsequent deaths. After going back to the city's library and confirming the Martyrs' background and symbol, they rushed back to the inn to inform the rest of their group.[6]
Back at the inn, the group readied themselves to travel the mountains as they followed Onyx, who tracked the Martyrs ahead. However, they all stopped as Onyx signaled Azadeh that they are not alone. Instantly, a barrage of arrows were loosed upon them while Nafanua fell over her horse. While the mercenaries hid, Azadeh ordered Onyx to go into the dark. Onyx found one of their attackers and mauled him to death. With another in her mouth, Onyx was soon aided by Roshan, Azadeh, and Dias, who fought and killed the remaining attackers. After the ambush, Onyx noticed Nafanua with an arrow in her back and whimpered besides her.[1]
When Roshan investigated Nafanua's corpse, she determined it was poison that killed her and saw her water held by Azadeh. Shouting the water was poison, Roshan saw Azadeh drop the water and command Onyx not to drink it. Realizing Francis being alone and one of the last members, Roshan interrogated him. Instantly, Francis shouted his support for the Martyrs before fleeing from them. With Onyx's scent of Francis, they continued on their trail, only to find themselves in Baghdad.[1]
Death
Tracking them down, they spotted Francis and then his location, which was the House of Wisdom. Infiltrating the meeting between the Martyrs and their customer, the mercenaries wait until the customer opened the case, only to hiss at the Martyrs. With Azadeh's whistle, the Martyrs and the customer were confused while Onyx attacked and killed Francis instantly. Immediately, Dias and Roshan managed to kill two Martyrs with head blows. After an intensive fight, both Azadeh and Roshan were disarmed and defenseless. However, Onyx attacked Roshan's attacker, only to be heavily wounded herself. Distraught, Azadeh stabbed and killed the Martyr before holding Onyx. Whimpering, Onyx passed away in her human's arms while Azadeh cried unconsolably.[7]
