Okunoin (奥之院) is a sacred Buddhist site and cemetery east of Kongōbu-ji in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke ventured towards the cemetery after learning from a former Oda soldier about Kimura Kei's promoter Kumabe Ujiie being there to recruit lost soldiers. Walking through the cemetery, he overheard former retainers talk and reminisce about their fallen lords, such as Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. Yasuke finally met with Ujiie, whom he followed and learned about Kei's cause and how he only worked with but not for its foreign advocates. Ultimately, Yasuke learned of Kei's location at Hibuse Fudo Temple and acquired an invitation.[2]
