Nyhofn

Nyhofn (lit: New port) was an early Norse settlement and port established by the Wolf Clan in Vinland during the late 9th century.

History

Circa 875, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir searched for Gorm Kjotvesson, the Maegester of the Order of the Ancients' Wardens of War sect, who was her blood enemy. Through her voyage, Eivor arrived at the docks of Nyhofn, where she was greeted and inspected by the dockswoman, Hilde. Upon their conversation, Eivor masqueraded as a woman named "Jora of Jorvik" and asked about the settlement. However, Hilde proved uncooperative. Later, while talking with a fellow Norse resident, Hilde was informed that the guide, Olav, was nowhere to be found and that Gorm sought to punish him for unsanctioned trading. Seeing an opportunity to find Gorm, Eivor left to look for Olav, who could hopefully lead her to her target.[1]

After Eivor found and assassinated Gorm with Olav's help, she returned to Nyhofn and met with Hilde again, revealing her true identity. Shortly after, Olav arrived and embraced Hilea, leading Eivor to realize the two were siblings. After Olav informed his sister of Gorm's death at Eivor's hands, Hilde thanked the Viking for protecting her brother but announced that she could no longer stay in Vinland if there was no one left to pay her for her work. She thus decided to sail back to England and invited Eivor to accompany her. Meanwhile, Olav decided to stay in Vinland with his new friends from Karonhiakèn:iate'.[2]

Prior to leaving Vinland, Eivor encountered a trio of hunters near Nyhofn and agreed to help them hunt a creature that had evaded them. With Eivor's assistance, the hunters found their target, a cougar, and killed it.[3] Eivor also aided a Norse woman who was worried for her brother Eirik after he had gone missing. Eivor soon found Eirik's body in the nearby woods and brought it back to Nyhofn, where his sister gave him a proper burial.[4]
