Northwest Passage features a daytime and nighttime setting.
Here, Connor boarded the Octavius, the ship of Kidd's former quartermaster, Hendrick van der Heul. However, after obtaining the map piece from the dead captain's corpse, the ice beneath the ship broke and caused the vessel to sink, forcing Connor to flee.

It is also a location in the singleplayer game for Pegleg's sidequest The Ghost Ship, where Hendrick van der Heul's vessel Octavius can be found.  Connor boards it in search of a scrap of William Kidd's treasure map, and after he finds it, the ice beneath the ship breaks and causes the vessel to sink, forcing Connor to flee. Despite Connor's scepticism about the existence of the Northwest Passage -- as demonstrated by his dialogue during the quest, both to himself and to van der Heul's frozen corpse -- it does indeed exist.
Later, in 2012, Northwest Passage was used by the entertainment branch of Abstergo Industries, as a simulated location for the console stage of the Animus technology.

Northwest Passage is an area between North America and Canada's Arctic Islands, which prominently featured a wrecked ship and an icy environment. Here, Connor boarded the Octavius, the ship of Kidd's former quartermaster, Hendrick van der Heul. However, after obtaining the map piece from the dead captain's corpse, the ice beneath the ship broke and caused the vessel to sink, forcing Connor to flee.
