Nie Zheng (Chinese: 聂政; died 397 BCE) was a Chinese assassin from Zheyi (modern day Zhecheng, Jiyuan) who lived during the Warring States period. He was also noted to be a musician.

Biography

In 397 BCE, Nie Zheng was paid a large sum by the minister Yan Sui who was in the midst of a power struggle with the South Korean minister Han Xialei, uncle to Marquess Lie of Han. Zheng succeeded in this assassination,[1] although he himself was killed in retaliation for the minister's death. He managed to hold off the attacks, killing at least a dozen men but was eventually subdued and killed.[2]

Legacy

Alongside with Zhuan Zhu, Yu Rang, Cao Mo and Jing Ke, he was listed by the historian Sima Qian as one of China's earliest assassins, known to later generations as "the Five Great Assassins."[3]
