The Mouseion of Alexandria was an institution of intellectual pursuit commissioned by Ptolemy I Soter as a competitor to the Platonic Academy in Athens. Containing the Library of Alexandria, it was dedicated to the Muses and was a center for philosophical and scientific enlightment.
Many scholars and intellects from across many kingdoms were invited share their knowledge in many aspects such as literature, science and geography, with the government funding their housing and needs. The layout of the institution was designed so that its buildings and grounds would accommodate free thinking, debate and presentation.
Many notable scholars such as Archimedes, Kallimachos, Eratosthenes, Euclid and Herophilos studied at the institution.
