Mongolia is a sparsely-populated country in Asia north of China. Historically, the region it occupies was home to confederations of nomadic peoples, among them the ancestors of both the Turks and the Mongols. [citation needed] It had a long history of conflict with China, conducting frequent raids and invasions against its much larger, heavily urbanized neighbour.

History

Mongol Empire

The state that would be known as Mongolia was first founded with the unification of the tribes under Genghis Khan in 1206, inaugurating the Mongol Empire. [citation needed] This was the largest contiguous land empire in the history of humanity. [citation needed] In a campaign of world conquest begun by Genghis Khan and continued by his successors, who joined the Templar Order,[1] states across Asia were annihilated, among them the Western Xia, the Song dynasty, various Iranic states, and the Assassin state.[2][3]

Yuan dynasty

The Mongol Empire fragmented under Genghis Khan's descendants, and Kublai Khan came to rule a unified Mongolian and Chinese state known as the Yuan dynasty.[4] Although the Chinese eventually overthrew the Mongol regime to establish the Ming dynasty, as late as the 16th century, Mongolia continued to threaten China with military incursions,[5][6] and the Ming extended the Great Wall of China as a barrier against such attacks.[7] Among these raids was one conducted by Altan Khan at the invitation of the Chinese Templar Zhang Yong in 1532, but it was halted by the Assassin Shao Jun. Altan Khan was also responsible for establishing the close ties between Mongolia and Tibetan Buddhism which persists to this day.[6]

Present Day

In 2016, at least one Assassin cell was active in the region. Yanmei was contacted by Assassin leader Gavin Banks, who informed her that Griffin would be coming to Mongolia, bringing along passengers to excavate the mountains in search of the second Prong of Eden. Yanmei provided a jet to Griffin and teenagers Natalya Aliyev, David Collins, and Javier Mondragón for their journey to the Tomb. However, the jet was shot down by the Templars. After surviving the crash, the Assassins confirmed the location of the Abstergo camp. As they made their way to the tomb on foot, David, believing a series of lights were signaling Grace's presence, headed toward the Abstergo camp, but was captured by the Templars. At the camp he was surprised to see Sebastian Monroe with Owen Meyers with his sister Grace Collins who were held captive by the Templar Isaiah. With their combined effort, Owen and Grace overpowered the security guard and escaped with Monroe and David the camp.[1]

Upon reaching the location where Natalya Aliyev had desynchronized, she still refused to reveal the tomb's location, distrusting the Assassins due to their unwavering adherence to the Creed. Yanmei, however, managed to convince Natalya to lead them to the tomb by explaining the true meaning of the Creed. Although Natalya was reluctant to help, she was persuaded. Later, she asked Javier to give him his Assassin crosbow and knocked out Yanmei and Griffin with sleeping darts, fearing the Assassins would use the Trident of Eden for their own ambitions, much like the Templars.[1]

Soon after, Isaiah arrived surrounded by armed Templar agents. The Assassins regained consciousness and attacked Isaiah's forces while Javier and Owen went inside the Tomb to confront Isaiah. However Isaiah obtained the fear prong and used it's power to subdue Owen and Javier and left them in the Tomb. He emerged from the tomb's entrance and used the Prongs power against everyone. Yanmei reliving her worst fears, tried to strike Isaiah down, but he quickly thrusted the prong into her body, ending her life before she could land a blow. Isaiah then ordered all the Templars to follow him, leaving the teenagers, Monroe and the Assassins behind.[1]

Griffin carried Yanmei's body out of the tomb. Upon reaching the Abstergo camp, Natalya felt regret for not telling the Assassins the tomb's location earlier, but Griffin reminded her that people die in war and that Yanmei would have respected her principles. Griffin tried to find a way to communicate with Gavin Banks or Yanmei's cell, but Victoria Bibeau arrived at the camp, and Grace went to her with the rest of the teenagers while Griffin remained hidden. Having learned of Isaiah's betrayal of the Order, she informed everyone that Isaiah had also acquired the first prong. The Templars drew their weapons upon hearing that the Assassins were present, and Natalya reasoned that both sides needed to work together before Isaiah destroyed both Orders, at which Griffin and Victoria agreed to a ceasefire until they defeated Isaiah and recovered the third prong, which was in Scandinavia.[1]
