The Mirage Blade was a janbiya belonging to Al Mualim, the Mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins.[1]
Designed using knowledge from an ancient tablet and decorated with a golden Assassin insignia near the hilt, the short blade was given to him at some point during his years as an Assassin. He retained it upon ascending to the rank of Mentor, though it was mostly ornamental by his later years.[1]
History
The blade's sole known use was in 1191. Following Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's failure to retrieve the Apple of Eden from beneath Solomon's Temple,[2] the Levantine Templars under Grand Master Robert de Sablé followed him to the Assassin fortress in Masyaf and attacked the castle.[3] Though caught off-guard and outnumbered,[4] the Assassins fended off the assault.[5]
In the aftermath, Al Mualim publicly berated Altaïr before the gathered survivors for breaking every tenant of the Creed within a day by killing an innocent priest under Soloman's Temple, brashly attacking the Templars when unprepared, and endangering the Brotherhood by leading their ancient enemy to their doorstep. Seeing that Altaïr still remained proud and unrepentant, Al Mualim apologized to his once-prized pupil before drawing the Mirage Blade and stabbing him in the gut.[5]
However, the wound was not fatal, as Al Mualim had subtly used the Apple's powers to ensure that Altaïr only "saw what [his Mentor] wanted [him] to see". Altaïr woke to find himself in Al Mualim's office, demoted to the rank of novice and tasked with hunting nine Templars to restore his title of Master Assassin.[6]

Trivia
- The blade's model in Assassin's Creed: Rebellion as a silver janbiya differs from its depiction in Assassin's Creed, where it has more of a bronze-colored blade and what appear to be three red gemstones embedded in the handle.
