Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (1731 – 1802) was the wife of George Washington and the inaugural first lady of the United States.[1]
In 1781, George acquired an Apple of Eden, which caused him to have a number of dreams. In one of these visions, George was staying with Martha and tending to his fields, with no war going on.[2]
On 14 December 1799, the day of his death, George mentioned Martha on his journal, saying that "Soon, I shall join my dearest Martha"[3] even though she outlived him by two years.[1] George's will provided for the more than 200 slaves he and Martha owned to be freed upon both of their deaths.[4]
