The Maidu are an indigenous people of northern California.

During the California Gold Rush, many were enslaved by John Sutter to mine gold for him. While traveling through the Great Basin Desert, Sutter was confronted by an Assassin at gunpoint, who demanded he give back the gold to the Maidu for their mistreatment.[1]
