Lykaon Wolf

The Lykaon Wolf was a legendary large black wolf which haunted the Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia, Greece during the 5th century BCE.

History

Myth

According to the Greek mythology, Lykaon was a cruel king of Arkadia who offered the flesh of his own son to Zeus to see whether Zeus was truly all-knowing. As punishment for this gruesome deed, Zeus transformed Lykaon into a wolf. [citation needed]

5th century BCE

During the Peloponnesian War the wolf was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra at the request of Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis. Kassandra subsequently looted its pelt and head and gave them to Daphnae in Chios.[1]

Place

Lykaon Wolf led a pack of wolves which made their lair in a cave on the mountainside. The cave provided shelter from the weather, and the area had easy access to rest of the peninsula, where the wolves preyed on man and animal alike.[2]
