The Korykian Cave is a cave delved into the side of the Grand Mount Parnassos in Phokis, Greece.
During the Peloponnesian War, the cave was used by bandits as a den, and the Spartan misthios Kassandra explored it, stealing the bandits' treasures and killing them.[1]
Kassandra also discovered the remains of Amyris, a priest of the Sanctuary of Delphi, in the cave. Amyris had stolen precious sapphires from a treasury with his friends, intending to sell them at Desphina Fort.[2]
Trivia
- The name of the cave is a reference to one of the Thriae who were said to inhabit the cave, the nymph Corycia whose father was said to be the river-god Kephisos.
