Amenhotep III (c. 1388 BCE – 1353 or 1351 BCE) was the ninth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt. Under his rule, Egypt entered an age of prosperity and artistic splendour, reaching the peak of its artistic and international power. He was later succeeded by his son, Akhenaten.
Biography
During his reign, Amenhotep built a mortuary temple in the Theban Necropolis across the Nile, along with two giant statues in his image.[1]
Legacy
In 2012, Amenhotep was one of many historical people included in the Glyph puzzles the late Assassin Clay Kaczmarek had left behind in the Animus as messages for his successor Desmond Miles to decipher. Desmond later did in September of that year.[2] Desmond solved this puzzle, which was part of a set titled "Instruments of Power" where Amenhotep was excluded from the list of historical individuals revealed by Clay to have wielded a Staff of Eden.[3]
Behing the Scenes
While Glyph 5, “Instruments of Power”, references Amenhotep III as the depicted figure, the image follows a stylistic convention in Egyptian art typically used to portray defeated enemies, slaves, or foreign captives, rather than the Pharaohs themselves. This suggests a potential confusion made by the Assassin's Creed II development team, who may have mistakenly attributed the image to him.[4]
