Hippolyta was the Queen of the Amazons and the daughter of Ares in Greek mythology.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Hippolyta was said to have been gifted a girdle by Ares,[1][2] signifying her authority as the queen of the Amazons.
According to one story, one of the tasks that Herakles had to perform during his twelve-year servitude to King Eurystheas of Mycenae was to fetch Hippolyta's girdle. Herakles met Hippolyta in the city of Themiskyra, and convinced her to give up her belt. The Amazons, however, attacked Herakles because of rumors spread by the goddess Hera amongst them, and Herakles slew Hippolyta in the mayhem.[2]
Another story recounts that another hero, Theseus, defeated Hippolyta, and she died of grief. In her honour, a monument was raised on a cliff in the Valley of King Lelex, overlooking Megara.[3]
Influence[edit | edit source]
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra recovered a belt believed to have been Hippolyta's legendary girdle.[1]
