Pope Gregory I (c. 540 – 604), born Gregorius Anicius and commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, was Pope from 590 to his death.
Biography[edit | edit source]
During his papacy, Gregory built the Santa Maria in Vallicella in Rome, a cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria in Vallicella.[1] In 595,[2] Gregory sent the monk Augustine on a mission to Britain to convert the local Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Augustine was largely successful in this capacity, converting King Æthelberht of Kent and the majority of the Kentish residents.[3]
