The gondola in use in Assassin's Creed II.

A gondola was a type of small boat used across Italy, but most popularly used in Venice. They were one of the vehicles available for use by the Assassin Ezio Auditore during the Renaissance.[1][2] The gondola was designed with a longer left-hand side, which allowed gondoliers to row it without changing the side the oar was on.[1]

Trivia

  • Gondolas can be found in all the maps of Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where Ezio can swim (everywhere except for Tuscany and Monteriggioni).
  • The six notches on the front of the gondola represent Venice's six districts. [citation needed]
  • There are some gondolas covered with cloth, though you can't use them to move around. They can be looted for some florins, though the money you receive is significantly less than what you would get from a treasure chest. Also, with each city that has a gondola, the cloth that covers the gondola are different colors; in Florence it is red, in Venice it is blue, and in Forlì it is green.[1]
  • A second, more opulent gondola model is used in a mission in Venice; this gondola only appears once.[1]
  • If you get onto an occupied gondola, the person on it will automatically jump off and drown. Interestingly, the bodies of drowned gondoliers never appear above the water, or as silhouettes underneath it, unlike the bodies of soldiers or civilians that are dropped into the water, or slide into it from a sloped roof.[1][2]
  • It is possible to glitch a gondolier by dropping onto the boat from a building and landing directly behind the gondolier. The boat will stop moving, and you can steer as normal, but until you leave the boat and get back on, the gondolier will continue to pole along, blissfully unaware of your presence.
  • Grabbing onto the front, notched portion of the gondola will allow you to ride along with the gondolier without him jumping off.
  • You can fall from any height onto a gondola as long as you are not diving and not take any damage.
  • The controls of the Naval Cannon are very similar to that of the gondola, the only difference being that in the Naval Cannon you can switch between rowing and firing the cannon.
