Gilgamesh (𒀭𒄑𒉋𒂵𒎌) was a historical king of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk during the late-2nd millenium BCE and a major hero in ancient Mesopotamian mythology.
Mythology
According to legend, Gilgamesh slayed the giant Humbaba in combat and forged the sword Humbaba's Fang from his tooth.[1]
Legacy
By the 1st century BCE, the sword perpetuated by Gilgamesh's legend would end up in Ptolemaic Egypt, where it was recovered by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa.[1] Gilgamesh's stories persisted through the centuries into the Abbasid Caliphate, as the thief Nehal later playfully compared the king of myth to her friend Basim Ibn Ishaq's desire to leave a legacy in Baghdad.[2]
