Abū al-'Abbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad (c. 836 – 866), known by his regnal name al-Musta'īn, was the twelfth caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate from 862 to 866. He was nephew to the tenth Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil.

Biography

Al-Musta'in was known for his reign during the Anarchy of Samarra, a succession crisis sparked by al-Mutawakkil's murder. With al-Mutawakkil's son al-Muntasir dying without heir, the Turkic military leaders held a council and elected al-Musta'in as successor over al-Mutawakkil's other son, Abu 'Abdallah.[1] When Abu 'Abdallah decried this as usurpation, since he had already chosen his own regnal name in anticipation of being crowned,[2] al-Musta'in placed him under house arrest to try and prevent him from potentially gaining civilian support, though this had the inverse affect and instead instigated another civil war, echoing the Fourth Fitna from a generation earlier between caliph al-Amin and prince al-Ma'mun.[3]
