The Dagger of Brutus was an heirloom short blade which belonged to the Roman Senator and Hidden One Marcus Junius Brutus, and was the same weapon Brutus used to assassinate Julius Caesar in the curia of the Theatre of Pompey.
Following the assassination, the dagger was broken after an altercation where Brutus decided not to kill Marcus Antonius. It was returned to him reforged from Egyptian and Roman steel by Amunet, co-founder of the Hidden Ones, after he made the decision to flee to Crete from Rome.[1]
Following Brutus' suicide[2] in 42 BCE after losing the Battle of Philippi during the last war of the Roman Republic, the dagger was sealed away in an underground chamber in Rome alongside his armor. In 1503 the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore found the chamber, and claimed both the dagger and armor for his own.[3]

Behind the scenes
The Dagger of Brutus, a weapon in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, is modeled after a Roman pugio, a type of dagger used as a secondary weapon used by Roman soldiers during the 1st century CE.
In Brotherhood, whenever Ezio wields the Dagger of Brutus, enemy morale is reduced by 20 points, which means that lower-ranked guards and crossbowmen will flee after the death of only one regular guard. Also of note is that the dagger's kill animations are unique, being more brutal and violent than other short bladed weapons in the same game. One of the unique animations involves Ezio stabbing the target in a frenzy as an allusion to Julius Caesar's assassination.
When first introduced in Brotherhood, the Dagger of Brutus was presented as an heirloom that Brutus used to assassinate Caesar. However, this was retconned in the comic follow up of Assassin's Creed: Origins, where the dagger is a gift from Amunet to Brutus after the assassination has taken place. It was later retconned again in the Assassin's Creed: The Official Collection to be the same dagger used in the assassination but afterwards broken and reforged by Amunet.
