The Council of Troyes was a church council convened in the city of Troyes, France under Pope Honorius II's authority in 1129. It played a key role in recognizing and legitimizing the Knights Templar.[1][2]

The adorning of the insignia of a red cross pattée to symbolize both their own blood and that of Jesus being shed for humanity was later added from the 1160s onwards with the blessing of Eugenius III.[2]
