The Column of Marcian, also known to some as the Kıztaşı, is a Roman honorific column that was erected in Constantinople in 455 and dedicated to the Emperor Marcian. It is made of red-grey Egyptian granite in two pieces.[1]
The basis is quadrilateral, formed by four slabs in white marble, decorated with medallions that sport the Chi Rho symbol on three faces, and two genii (who account for the Turkish name of the column) holding a globe.[1]
The column is topped by a Corinthian capital decorated with aquilas. This is likely a base made to support a statue of Marcian, in imitation of the Column of Trajan and the Column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome, both of which were topped by statues of the emperor they commemorated.[1]
