The pistol

Cesare Borgia's pistol was a golden wheellock pistol made by Leonardo da Vinci under duress for the Templar Cesare Borgia.[1] It was considered to be of rare design for including a number of innovations never seen on wheellocks of the era.

History

Cesare first unveiled the firearm during the Siege of Monteriggioni in 1500, when he took it from fellow Templar Octavian de Valois used it to execute the Italian Assassins' leader Mario Auditore while inviting the surviving House of Auditore members to confront the Borgia family in Rome.[1]

Octavian holding Pantasilea hostage

In August 1503, Octavian de Valois used the gun to threaten the Assassins Ezio Auditore and Bartolomeo d'Alviano into compliance by holding Bartolomeo's wife Pantasilea Baglioni hostage. Ezio fired his Hidden Gun into the air, signaling the start of a counterattack by his assembled and disguised mercenaries. Startled, Octavian fled further into the Castra Praetoria with his gun and prisoner,[2] though Ezio gave chase. Despite the Templar noticing Ezio and shooting at him, the Assassin evaded it and assassinated his enemy.[3]

By 1507, the pistol had been returned to Cesare's hands and he carried it to Viana Castle. There, a group of Italian Assassin apprentices enacted Ezio's plan[4] to sabotage the weapon, which allowed their Mentor to approach Cesare during his siege without having to worry about it.[5]
