A camel (Camelus genus) is an even-toed ungulate with distinctive fatty deposits, commonly known as humps, on its back. There are three species of camel: the dromedary, or one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius), which inhabits the Middle East and the Horn of Africa; the Bactrian, or two-humped camel (Camelus bactrianus), which inhabits Central Asia; and the wild Bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) that, in the 21st century, have limited populations in remote areas of northwest China and Mongolia.
A desert animal, the camel relies on its humps to help it survive in hot climates, and throughout human history, it has been used as a form of transportation across arid regions like Egypt and the Middle East.
