Biography

By 1696, Lord Benedict Crystal had lost his entire family fortune to a bad run of investments. In order to correct this, he turned to counterfeiting, having coin-making machines installed in a hidden room in his estate. In 1696, Crystal held a dinner party with many distinguished guests in attendance, including Sir Artemis Murray and Isaac Newton.[1] During the party, however, the theft of a necklace allowed Newton to discover the hidden room, leading to Crystal's arrest and incarceration in the Tower of London.[2]

While imprisoned, Crystal was visited by his former butler Finnegan, who informed him that Newton would come to eliminate him, completing the murders of the counterfeiters, not knowing that Finnegan had been paid to set Newton up.[2]
