Battus I of Cyrene (died 600 BCE), also known as Battos, was the founder of the ancient Greek colony of Cyrenaica and its capital Cyrene.
Biography
In the late 7th century BCE, the Oracle of Apollo in Delphi gave the residents of Thera a prophecy. By Apollo's bidding, the Therans must travel to Libya to set up a new home. However, they did not follow the prophecy, resulting in a period of drought which lasted for 7 seven years.[1]
Eventually, Battus visited the Oracle again and heeded the advice, bring a group of Therans and eventually founded the colony of Cyrenaica and Cyrene.[1]
According to Greek legends, Apollo bade him to build Cyrene by a sacred spring. That day, he fired an arrow with his bow that pierced the heavens. He also likely had a spear forged for him. He eventually died in 600 BCE and was buried in a tomb in Cyrene.[1]
