The Aurelian Walls (Italian: Mura Aureliane) were the city walls of Rome, and served as the boundaries of the city.
The walls were first built in 271 CE by Emperor Aurelian and later completed by Probus in 275 CE, serving to protect Rome from barbarian attacks.[1]
In 545, during the Gothic Wars, much of the walls were destroyed by King Totila of the Ostrogoths in an attempt to reduce the Byzantine's ability to defend Rome.[1]
They largely stand intact to this day.
