Atahualpa (c. 1500 – 26 July 1533) was the last Sapa Inca of the Inca Empire before its conquest by Spain.

After being captured by Francisco Pizarro, Atahualpa was eventually executed. The Assassin Gonzalo Pardo, who had infiltrated Pizzaro's forces, attempted in vain to rescue him, and subsequently deserted Pizzaro's army, blaming himself for the Sapa Inca's death.[1]
