Tyre is a city in the South of Lebanon. The location of the city of Tyre is not in doubt, for it exists to this day on the same spot and is known as Sur... The character of the city has changed, however. In ancient times it was situated on an island, but from the time of Alexander the Great... the city has been linked to the mainland by a dike...Tyre was founded around 2750 BC according to Herodotus and it appears on monuments as early as 1300 BC. Philo of Byblos (in Eusebius) quotes the antiquarian authority Sanchuniathon as stating that it was first occupied by one Hypsuranius. Sanchuniathon's work is said to be dedicated to "Abibalus king of Berytus" -- possibly the Abibaal who was king of Tyre. There are ten Amarna letters dated 1350 BC from the mayor, Abi-Milku, written to Akenaten. The subject is often water, wood, and the Habiru overtaking the countryside, of the mainland, and how it affected the island-city.

Tyre is a city in Lebanon, famed in the Third Crusade for its unassailable defenses. Under Conrad of Montferrat, it was the only city of the Kingdom of Jerusalem to have defended itself successfully against Saladin's conquests.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Third Crusade, Tyre was under the control of the Crusaders and housed two of the Templars' major bases of operations, the Stronghold and the Hospital. It also had an active Assassin presence, with a carpet merchant by the name of Hamid presiding over the local Assassin bureau.[1]

In 1190, the Levantine Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad visited the city three times during his mission to recover the Chalice. In the first of these three visits, he infiltrated the Templar Hospital in order to kill the doctor Roland Napule and retrieve the second key to the Temple of Sand.[2] After his failure to find the Chalice in said temple, he returned to track down the Templar leader Basilisk as his only lead to the artifact. He scaled the great wall of the heavily reinforced Templar's Hold, infiltrated the fortress, and nearly killed Basilisk, who convinced the Assassin to spare his life in exchange for the Chalice's location.[3]

When Altaïr discovered that the Chalice was his friend Adha all along, the two plotted to flee the conflict between the Assassins and Templars by sailing across the Mediterranean Sea. It was from the Tyre docks that they planned to make their escape, and Adha waited there while Altaïr killed the Assassin traitor Harash in Alep.[4] By the time he arrived to reunite with Adha, the Templars had captured her and had their entire army occupy the harbor. In his frantic attempt to rescue Adha, Altaïr slew Basilisk in a final duel, but was unable to save his lover, whom the Templars took on a ship across the sea and later murdered.[5]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Tyre was the historical location where Conrad, the King of Jerusalem and son of William of Montferrat, was killed by the Assassins, possibly on orders by Rashid Ad-din Sinan.[6]
