Thomas Conway (1735 – c. 1800) was an Irish major general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1777, Thomas Conway was serving as a brigadier general[1] in the Continental Army under General George Washington. While Washington suffered military defeats at the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown, General Horatio Gates achieved a decisive victory at Saratoga. Subsequently, Conway wrote extensively to Gates about Washington's failings. When Washington learned of the letters, he took it as a sign that both of his subordinates were conspiring behind his back to replace him, and Gates and Conway were compelled to explain themselves before the Continental Congress.
