St. Bartholomew's Hospital is a teaching hospital located in the City of London, founded in 1123.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1123, the hospital was founded by Rahere, a travelling entertainer turned Anglo-Roman monk. While on a pilgrimage to Rome, Rahere fell ill. He vowed that if he survived and returned home safely he would found a hospital. Seemingly achieving his goal, the hospital was founded.[1]
In 1562, Dr. Rodrigo Lopez was appointed to the hospital as a physician, later becoming Queen Elizabeth's chief physician. However, he was arrested in 1594 for attempting to poison the Queen and was later tried and hanged.[1]
In 1831, after the cholera outbreak, St. Bartolomew's Hospital refused to admit those afflicted. Instead, cholera patients were kept in a nearby house which was demolished following the outbreak.[1]
In 1843, St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College was established.[2] For its time, it was considered state-of-the-art, featuring a library, medical and chemical theatres, an anatomy museum, and dissection rooms.[1]
