A skald (or skáld), meaning "poet",[1] was a title given to those who would compose poetry in alliterative verse.[2] Skaldic poems followed a complex set of rules, employing many kennings, and focused on honoring their subjects with glory and fame, these usually being their paying benefactors.[3] Most known skalds were attached to the courts of Norse kings during the Viking Age,[2] though the Raven Clan was also known to have a number of them among their ranks.[4]
Bragi, the husband to Iðunn, is the god of poetry and patron of skalds in Norse mythology.[5] Another mythical tale relating to poetry crafting is the magic potion known as the Mead of Poetry, said to be able to give the power of skaldship to any who drank it, leading to those who excelled in their craft being said to have tasted it.[6]
