Sapphire is a precious stone found typically in various shades of blue but also available in other colors.

5th century BCE[edit | edit source]
During the Peloponnesian War, sapphires were more valuable than drachmae or silver according to Photios, a former mercenary who in his old age had become a guard of a treasury within the Sanctuary of Delphi in Phokis, Greece. Sapphires donated by a Thracian king had been stolen from the treasury under his watch, and he asked his friend and former pupil, the Spartan misthios Kassandra to find them.[1]
16th century[edit | edit source]
During his campaign to liberate Rome from the House of Borgia's rule, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore acquired sapphires. At the time, the gemstone was commonly worn as jewelry.[2]
18th century[edit | edit source]
Alonzo Batilla acquired a sapphire in the West Indies during his time as a pirate.[3]
