Rectory

The Rectory in Jorvik was the main residence of the clergymen who served at The Minster in the city during the 9th century.

Circa 874, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir travelled to the rectory in search of leads regarding the Order of the Ancients member known as "The Firebrand", after hearing from abbess Ingeborg of suspicious behaviors revolving around the bishops and priests in the area. Eivor was able to find her way into one of the locked houses, interrogating the monk who hid in there.[1]

The monk directed Eivor to the bishop's quarters nearby, where she found the bishop burnt to death in his chair. She was able to recover a half-burned note hidden beneath the bishop's body, linking the burnt Christian texts to The Minster nearby.[1]
