Quicksilver, or elemental mercury, is a liquid metal thought to have healing properties in ancient times, even though it could prove lethal if touched or inhaled.
During the Renaissance, the Assassin Ezio Auditore regularly found quicksilver when in Rome after looting treasure chests or corpses, catching Borgia messengers, or as a reward for sending his apprentices on missions. Due to its purported medicinal value, he could sell the metal to various merchants for large sums of coin.[1] The Italian Assassins would later use quicksilver to restore priceless artifacts. Quicksilver was also a prime ingredient in the creation of Nicolas Flamel's philosopher's stone.[2]
In 1567, the Chinese Assassins delivered a lethal dose of mercury to the Jiajing Emperor, who was obsessed with finding the fabled elixir of life. Unaware of its true nature, the Emperor drank the mixture and was lethally poisoned.[3]
