Amritsar, a major city in the Punjab

Punjab is a geopolitical, cultural, and historical region in South Asia, comprising areas of eastern Pakistan and northern India.

History[edit | edit source]

In the late 4th century BCE, Punjab was one of the regions invaded by Alexander the Great as part of the expansion of his Empire to the East. In 326 BCE, Alexander defeated the Indian king Porus near the Hydaspes river. Porus submitted to Alexander, becoming one of his allies and subordinate ruler.[1][2]

In the 16th century, the city of Amritsar was founded by Ram Das, one of the ten Gurus of Sikhism. He also ordered the construction of the Sikh temple Harmandir Sahib.[3]

In 1801, Punjab was conquered by Maharajah Ranjit Singh, creating the Sikh Empire.[3] In the aftermath of the Second Anglo-Sikh War and the Sikh Empire's conquest by the British Empire, the East India Company took the opportunity to steal large amounts of Punjabi gold and smuggle it to London.[4] In 1868, the last Sikh Maharaja, Duleep Singh, became aware of this operation and enlisted the help of his Assassin allies, Jacob and Evie Frye, to recover the gold and ship it back to Punjab.[5][6]
