The Prytaneion was a building in the Sanctuary of Olympia, Elis, Greece.
History[edit | edit source]
The Prytaneion was the residence for the priests and game officials of the Olympic Games, as well as the house for the altar in honor of the goddess Hestia.[1]. Upon the altar burned the Fire of Hestia, which was used to light all the braziers within the Sanctuary, and came to be called Olympic flame.[2]
During the 428 BCE Olympics the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the building.[3]
